Spiritual Direction Philosophy
I orient from a Religious Naturalism perspective. I was ordained as a Lutheran Minister in 1973 so I have a deep understanding of traditional Christianity and the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures. In 1981 I became a Unitarian Universalist Minister because I personally no longer believed in traditional theism. I trained at the Shalem Institute in 2000 and was invited to become an adjunct faculty member for about ten years.
I leave it to the individual directee to define and interpret what the spirit means to them, be it a theistic concept of the spirit of God, Jesus, Goddess or a more mystical sense of the spirit within them or a panentheistic sense of the spirit in, with and around them and all that exists. My approach accepts, recognizes and appreciates the person’s individual experience of the spiritual presence rather than any specific interpretation of their experience by me.
When we are in silence & during the time of our being together, it is my goal, intention & desire to be as totally focused on the person I am with as is possible. Some may call this holding them in prayer, I call it holding them & myself in a mystical presence of timelessness & love.
